BEST LOCAL PUBLIC FIGURE WE'LL MISS

Wayne Sallade

Earlier this year we said goodbye to a personality as fierce as a Category 4 storm. After 37 years in Charlotte County government and 39 seasons as the voice of Charlotte High School Tarpons football, Wayne Sallade — the former director of Emergency Management — and his wife, Vicki, bid adieu to tropical climes of Southwest Florida and said hello to snow-capped Colorado mountains. Mr. Sallade is best known for alerting the community to the coming onslaught of — and recovery from — Hurricane Charley in 2004. Over the years, he spoke to more than 35,000 fourth graders about hurricanes. Mr. Sallade will forever be woven into the fabric of Charlotte County and, thanks to Facebook, we can check in on him from time to time.
