Community Foundation awards $36,000 in grants

Coalition offers financial aid
In conjunction with the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009, the Early Learning Coalition of Florida's Heartland is offering financial relief to unemployed parents with child care expenses. The Animal Welfare League of Charlotte County will conduct a blessing of the animals at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. Pets must be leashed or in a carrier and fully controlled and monitored. Full Story

Modern Woodmen awards grant
Emma Dennison of Port Charlotte was honored for hours of community service by local Modern Woodmen of America members. Ms. Dennison was honored for her dedication as human resource director of Charlotte County Sheriff's office fundraisers for charitable organizations and involvement with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, YMCA and summer youth programs. Post office named for Navy SEAL
The post office at 19190 Cochran Blvd. in Port Charlotte has been named the Lt. Cmdr. Roy H. Boehm Post Office Building. Lt. Cmdr. Roy H. Boehm, who was a resident of Charlotte County for many years, developed and launched the Navy's elite Sea, Air and Land forces unit known as the SEALs in 1961 under orders from President John F. Charlotte schools rank first in state
Charlotte County Public Schools ranked No. 1 in Florida for the second consecutive year with 61 percent of students scoring a grade of 3 or higher on Advanced Placement exams. No other district in the state scored in the 60 percent range. Full Story
"Bar Stool Open" on tap
On Oct. 3, Girls Night Out and Budweiser, through Peace River Distributing, will partner with nine Punta Gorda bars in the second annual "Bar Stool Open." The first event in 2008 raised more than $10,000. Everyone from Florida who becomes a member of the Arbor Day Foundation in September will receive 10 free live oak trees as part of the Foundation's Trees for America campaign. Fighting against lung cancer
The first Free to Breathe 5K run/ walk is set for Saturday, Oct. 31. Awards will be given to men and women. The event is sponsored by National Lung Cancer Partnership. Waste not, want not

Recycling isn't a new idea. Our ancestors reused bits of cloth for quilts, made clothing out of flour bags and used old cigar boxes to make chip-carved picture frames and boxes. Their rule was "waste not, want not," so it's not surprising that the bare wooden spools left after thread was used seemed too practical to ignore. Full Story
Punta Gorda Chamber honors announced
At its annual awards dinner last week, there were 21 finalists for the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce's 2009 Donna Heidenreich Business of the Year Awards. The chamber also celebrated its fifthyear anniversary as a chamber. It formed from the Punta Gorda Business Alliance shortly after Hurricane Charley in 2004. Full Story
