Area Zonta Clubs and Peace Corps helping to save lives in Guatemala
Since 2007, six Zonta Clubs in Southwest Florida have assembled 6,000 birthing kits for use by midwives to ensure safer, more hygienic births in Guatemala, a country with one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world. Reports from Guatemala are that lives are indeed being saved, not only those of the babies but also those of the birthing mothers. Full Story
Correa addresses rebuilding, TEAM Punta Gorda meeting
Urban planner Jaime Correa paid a return visit recently to Punta Gorda to assess the status of implementation of the Citizens’ Master Plan developed in 2004 in the wake of Hurricane Charley. Mr. Correa was hired by TEAM Punta Gorda to help draft a master plan to rebuild, and had not returned to the area since the plan was finalized four years ago. Full Story
Sallade enters Florida Emergency Management Hall of Fame
Veteran Charlotte County Emergency Management Director Wayne Sallade has been inducted into the Florida Emergency Management Hall of Fame.
It all came as a surprise to the 22-year emergency manager, who was asked to attend a two-day conference at the State Logistics Response Center in Orlando to address top emergency management issues. Full Story

CCSO APB: adoptable dog
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has released an all-points bulletin for
the community. Clutch, an American bulldog mix who has been in training with the CCSO’s Cell Dog program, is up for adoption.
Clutch was once a hunting dog and later in life, a stray. That’s when he entered the CCSO’s training program. Full Story

BoogieMen set playground benefit
The BoogieMen will be playing at the Charlotte Harbor Event Center at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, to raise money for an adaptive playground for special-needs children at Charlotte Harbor Centers. Charlotte sheriff’s manager earns state accreditation
CCSO accreditation manager Christine Goracke is one of the first in the state of Florida to become a Florida Certified Accreditation Professional. The certification was presented on Oct. 29 in Ponte Vedra, Florida.

P.E.O. awards $2,000 nursing scholarship
The P.E.O. Chapter of Port Charlotte, a philanthropic educational organization, has presented a $2,000 grant to Jennifer Nash of Punta Gorda, who will use it toward education in health care at Edison State College in Punta Gorda. Full Story
Nav-A-Gator, Parrot Heads, donates to needy
On Wednesday, Nov. 18, the Nav-AGator Grill in Lake Suzy and the Charlotte Harbor Parrot Head Club presented a $1,500 check to the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranch. Representatives from the Youth Ranch and Desoto County Sheriff William Wise accepted the donation, which was raised from proceeds of the Parrotheads’ second birthday party in September, held at the Nav-A-Gator Grill. Mistletoe Ball set for Dec. 5
The second Mistletoe Ball will be held at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center in Punta Gorda on Saturday, Dec. 5. Proceeds from the event benefit the Safe House Shelter and Hot Meals Program.
