SWFL Blue Star Mothers work to raise funds
The service organization Star Mothers of America was launched in 1942 as the brainchild of Army Capt. George Maines as a support group for mothers of service members.
Star Mothers of America provides support for military members in active duty, as it assists veterans organizations and the promotion of patriotism.
Members of the Blue Star Mothers must have a child serving in the military or one who has been honorably discharged as a military veteran.
The Star Mothers of America organization supports all branches of the armed forces, including the U.S. Marines, Navy, Army, Coast Guard, Air Force, National Guard and the Merchant Marines.
The Star Mothers honor those in the military reserves, those retired or on active duty.
The Blue Star Mothers organization is working to fill “freedom boxes” — care packages of food, puzzle books and health/ comfort items for troops serving in war zones, and needs to raise a minimum of $466 by Aug. 22 to cover postage.
Donations are being accepted, and can be made in honor of, or in memory of, a military member. The organization’s “give cards” can be sent to loved ones as gifts. The Blue Star Mothers’ project is posted on gulfcoastgives.org. Donations are tax deductible. ¦
