GIVING BRIEFS

Charlotte State Bank joins Shoes for Kids drive

Charlotte State Bank & Trust is once again among local businesses joining the Sunrise Kiwanis annual Shoes for Kids drive, and serving as collection points for new sneakers to be distributed to Charlotte County students in need.

“Last year, we donated 302 pairs of new sneakers, which exceeded the previous year’s total by quite a bit,” said Craig DeYoung, president of Charlotte State Bank & Trust and treasurer of Sunrise Kiwanis. “I’m confident our customers and staff will come through in a big way again this year.”

Collection boxes will be on display in the lobbies at three bank offices:

• Murdock, 1100 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte.

• Punta Gorda, 2331 Tamiami Trail, Punta Gorda.

• Charlotte Harbor, 23112 Harborview Road, Charlotte Harbor.

Shoes will be accepted at any Charlotte State Bank & Trust office during banking hours. The shoe drive is scheduled to end on July 23.

Kiwanis project coordinator Christy Smith, founder and chairperson of Shoes for Kids, said volunteers delivered 7,500 pairs of new sneakers from July 2016 through May 2017. The most frequently requested sizes were girls’ sizes 2, 3 and 4, and boys’ sizes 1 through 5.

“In 12 years, 60,180 new pairs of shoes have been given through this project,” Ms. Smith said. “At $15 per pair, this amounts to over $902,700 in fundraising. We deliver to all schools in the Charlotte County Public Schools system for children in grades pre-K through 12.”
